Gods of Jade and Shadow (Paperback)

“A refreshing modern take on a mythology you might not be familiar with. Casiopea Tun is the put-upon servant to her rich relatives, but she is no Cinderella. In fact, she’s the one doing the rescuing—in this case, she’s saving an imprisoned Mayan death god. Bound to this smoldering former king, fierce Casiopea must use her wits and her indomitable will to overcome gods, sorcerers, ghosts, demons, and, yes, said rich relatives to restore her companion to his throne and save her own life along the way.”

For lovers of mythology, this is a real treat. I was not familiar with Mesoamerican myths so this was very exciting for me – a new voyage to a land of dreams and possibilities. When Casiopea opens an old trunk in her grandfather’s room, she allows the Mayan God of Death to escape (think Pandora’s box) and her previously boring life takes on a new purpose as she is sent out to help him regain his former status. Her journey takes her away from the quiet town of her birth and into the jungles of the Yucatán peninsula, into the raging crowds and bright lights of Mexico City, and as far away as the “underworld.” It’s the Roaring 20’s and things are hopping. I loved this reverent fairy tale.
“A spellbinding fairy tale rooted in Mexican mythology . . . Gods of Jade and Shadow is a magical fairy tale about identity, freedom, and love, and it's like nothing you've read before.”—Bustle

The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own.
Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it—and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea’s demise, but success could make her dreams come true.
In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey from the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City—and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld.
