Bio

In the past I have worked in the forest service, as a travel agent, and as an elementary school secretary and now working at Auntie's, I feel like a kid in a candy store. There are so many things in life I want to experience but there is never enough time or money to do everything. Books have been my ticket to other places, times, and lifestyles. Starting a new book is as exciting as opening a gift, you never know if it will be a treasure or a dud. I am constantly delighted by what I do find and learn. When not reading, I take great pleasure in travel of all kinds, creating menus and cooking, and basking in the beauty of nature.

As a homicide detective in Denmark, Cark Morck is cantankerous and difficult to work with. That is why when he returns to work after being shot in the head, his boss transfers him to the basement and the newly formed Department Q which handles unsolved crimes. Morck is content to sleep the day away but that all changes when he is presented with an eager assistant, Assad. This book works on many levels. Not only is it an absorbing psychological thriller, the relationship between Morck and Assad is delightfully entertaining. This is the first in a Glass Key Award winning series and I am hoping for many more to come.

I received a Christmas gift from Northpole, Alaska this year and was delighted to find this book. It has been on my list for years and I just never found the time to read it. A small town is like a big, fun dysfunctional family but Haines, Alaska seems to have more than its fair share of oddballs. Lende writes obituaries for the local newspaper and seems to have firsthand knowledge of everyone in town. With a great deal of love for the town, its inhabitants, and nature she shares her Alaska with the reader. Wonderful!

"Before I Go To Sleep" by S. J. Watson is about Christine who has a form of amnesia that erases most of her memory if she goes into a deep sleep. Everyday she wakes in a strange bed with a strange man and when she looks in the mirror, it is at a woman she hardly recognizes. You feel like you are there with her as she struggles to reclaim an identity and rediscover a frightening past. I was hooked from the beginning and had chills as I realized what was going on. It is easy to understand why Ridley Scott has bought the film rights.

"Sister" by Rosamund Lupton explores the exceptional bond between two sisters whose personalities are widely different. When Beatrice learns her younger sister, Tess, is missing, she leaves for London immediately. When Tess’s body is found, she refuses to believe it was suicide and begins a search alone for the killer. At times terrifying and always poignant, it made me want to be a better person. Again, an ending that is totally unexpected. and unforgettable.

If I had to use one word to describe this book, it would be exquisite. It is a joy to read a book as beautifully written as this. Olive Wellwood is a well know children's author in Edwardian England. She lives what seems to be an ideal life with her husband and many children in a beautiful rambling house in the country. But in this home there are many secrets and these dark secrets are capable of destroying the children and the heart of this home.

This excellent page-turner is set in Victorian England. It starts out with a confession of murder, "After killing the red-haired man, I took myself off to Quinn's for an oyster supper". The journey to why proves as provocative as the first line.
